yeah, so, here my story for you to read... well, all i've got written so far.
Surviving High School: An outcast’s story… (Stupid High School!)
As the students poured into Hilton High School on the first day of school, one car in particular stood out. It was a black Honda Civic, sort of old but not yet falling apart. What made it stand out though, were the three students that stepped out of it.
The driver was a somewhat tall, thin guy dressed from head to toe in black. He was wearing black and white converses, no socks, black cargo shorts that almost came to his ankles and a black t-shirt with the words “Middle Man Out” printed on it. On his right arm he wore a black and blue wristband and on his left arm he wore what looked like his dog’s collar and on his left middle finger he wore a solid black ring. His face was pretty normal except for his unnaturally black hair and all the spiked chains around his neck.
The second student slowly got out from the passenger’s side. This was a tall girl, almost head to toe in black. She had on black and red converses, black capris, and a red shirt with a black rose on it. She was a pale girl, but her black shoulder length hair with hot pink stripes highlighted that. She wore a silver star around her neck, a silver watch around her wrist and a black ring on her left middle finger.
The third to get out was a 5’9”, thin guy who had been sitting behind the driver. He was dressed in black like the other two, but unlike them he was wearing black tennis shoes and long baggy black pants. He had on a navy shirt that said “Live hard, die hard.” He also did not have black hair like the others. Under a black baseball hat, you could see a little bit of blonde hair sticking out. He had a calm look on his face, unlike the “let the world fall dead” look of the others. On his left middle finger he wore a black ring.
-O-
A little farther down a red truck pulled into a spot. The boy and girl inside were definitely twins. The both had red hair, dressed all in black and had glasses. The only differences were that the boy had black streaks in his hair and the girl was abnormally thing and wore a ton of make up. Both had a black ring on their middle finger.
-O-
The driver of the black car stood and waited for the other two. While those five students talked over their summer, a dirty-blonde headed girl in jeans and a t-shirt stood outside the school door. She was new. It was her senior year and her parents had made her move states away from her home, just because her father’s job. And now, she was at some new school, looking for someone friendly to ask where Mr. Rick’s class was.
-O-
“How ya been for the past few weeks?” the blonde guy asked the twins.
“Good enough. Andrea’s problem is getting a little better” the guy twin answered. Andrea squirmed a bit.
“It’s not a problem, Brian, it’s not. Stop saying it is!” she said to her brother. He just grinned.
“Ok, so other than that, how’s it been for you guys?” the girl with the black hair asked shrugging her shoulders.
“Pretty good I guess.” Andrea said. “Katie, did you happen to get my e-mail?”
“Yeah, I did. Kaleb! You just locked my stuff in your car!” Katie, the black haired girl yelled.
For the first time, the driver of the black car smiled. “Yeah, I did! Ha! It’s my car. I can lock it when I want to.” He laughed as he unlocked it, “Sorry, Katie.”
“Don’t do it again please” Katie said before she added “It would not be fun all year long.”
The blonde guy started to laugh. As he did, Katie grabbed his hat and whacked him with it.
“Jacob, don’t laugh!” she yelled at him.
“Ow! Sorry, it was just funny. Hey, don’t look at me like that.” Jacob said as he gave Katie a hug.
“That’s so sweet, but shouldn’t we get to class now?” Andrea said walking toward the school.
“Naw, Mr. Rick won’t mind.” Brian answered jumping around.
“Some of us don’t have Mr. Rick first period.” Andrea answered, rather annoyed at her brother.
Kaleb thought that over a little bit. “You know, she has a point there.
-O-
As the flow got thinner, the girl by the door got a little nervous. She hadn’t found anyone to talk to yet.
-O-
As the five started walking toward the school, Jacob noticed her. “Hey, is she new?” He asked Katie.
“I think so, she looks kind of lost.” Katie nodded toward her, “Andrea, let’s go see if she needs help.”
Andrea shrugged. “Sure, at least as long as the guys don’t come with us, we don’t want to scare her.” She whispered the last part.
Jacob sighed, “Do we embarrass you two?”
Andrea ignored Jacob’s comment. “So, after you Katie.”
“Andrea!” Katie sighed. Her friends weren’t as outgoing as her and Jacob. She walked toward the girl.
-O-
She had noticed them talking. Maybe it was the way they dressed or the fact that they kept looking at her, it made her feel just a little uncomfortable. Katie noticed that as she smiled at the girl.
“Hey, I’m Katie; I noticed that you look a little confused. Can I help you?” Katie said nicely as Jacob tried not to laugh.
“Um, yeah, I’m trying to figure out where my class is” the girl said, noticing Jacob’s snickering. She looked down at her schedule again.
“Hey, don’t mind him, he’s just rude. What class are you looking for?” Katie asked shoving Jacob back toward the parking lot.
“I’m looking for Mr. Rick’s class” the girl said with a small smile.
“Hey dude… dudet! I’m heading there right now!” Brian jumped as he spoke. “I’ll show you the way if you want.”
Katie laughed at the girl’s expression. “If you want… Brian, don’t scare her… he and Jacob here can show you, since they’re headed that way.”
“Sure, I guess” the girl answered hesitantly.
“Brian doesn’t bite, usually, and I don’t think I do either.” Jacob said, “I’m Jacob, and you are?” He asked extending his hand.
“Courteney,” she said shaking his hand, “nice to meet you.”
“And now,” Jacob said as the bell rang. “Time for the school year to start.”
With that, Jacob, Brian and Courteney went off to Mr. Rick’s class as Andrea, Kaleb and Katie walked down the other hall way.
-O-
“I’d like to say a welcome to our new students,” said a very professional looking teacher. “We hope that your time here will be, how should I put it? Worth while. Yes, and now, why don’t you two introduce yourselves to the class?”
Courteney and the other new student stood up. When she got to the front of the classroom she got a smile from Jacob and Brian gave her a thumbs up. She had only walked to class with them, but she already knew that she liked them. She let the other student go first.
“My name is Mitchell, my sister goes here already, her name is Lindsey. You guys probable know her already. I’m a junior. I like football and uh… girls.” He said the last word with a glance around the room. Jacob and Brian looked at each other and winced. Great, not another Johnson in the school.
“My name is Courteney, I just moved here from New Jersey. I like music, especially the band Middle Man Out. Um… oh, and I’m a senior.” Courteney finished with a smile.
“Well, welcome Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Courteney. It’s nice to have some new faces in my class. Mostly I get those who just like to hear my jokes.” The teacher said as Jacob and Brian and a few others laughed. “I’m Mr. Rick and this is your pre-college psychology class.” That got a few laughs. “Ok, ok, quiet, I can’t have ya’ll laughing on the first day of school.” He noticed Courteney and Mitchell still standing, “You two can sit down now, sorry about that. I’m a little scatter brained this morning. Has anyone seen my planner?” As Mr. Rick looked through his desk drawer, Courteney sat down. Jacob leaned over to her.
“You’re going to love this guy, his class is awesome.” He grinned.
“That’s good to know.” Courteney whispered back.
“Jacob! Stand up and tell us how your summer was since you are so willing to talk today. While you do that, I need to find my planner.” Mr. Rick laughed when Jacob jumped. He’d known both Jacob and Kaleb since they were little and he was their favorite teacher in return. In fact, Jacob, Kaleb, Katie, Andrea, and Brian all loved Mr. Rick.
Jacob stood up, cleared his throat and said, “My car died, so I can’t drive anywhere anymore, my mom almost threw my brother out of the house, my dad accidentally killed my sister’s hamster,” Brian laughed as Jacob thought. “Oh and I turned 18.” He said at last.
“Aha!” Mr. Rick shouted. “I found my planner! Sorry about your sister’s hamster, send her my regards. You may sit down.” Jacob sat down. “Mitchell, since you are new here, why don’t you read chapter one for us?”
“Aw, come on, she’s new too.” Mitchell groaned, pointing at Courteney.
“Yes, but she’s the lady and I’m sure she won’t mind, it’s not nice to point. Also, in my class the men are the leaders. No offense to the ladies, but they men need to lead, so if you will, page three, the first two paragraphs please.”
~~~
As the days dragged on, Courteney found some people to talk to and Jacob, Kaleb and the gang went on like normal, until one day. Courteney was eating lunch with some of the people she’d come to know when she saw Katie and Andrea eating at a table, just the two of them.
“Hey, I’m going to go say hi to them real quick.” She said, starting to get up. Lindsey shot out her arm.
“Wait one second, do you mean them?” She said, pointing harshly at the two girls. Courteney nodded. “If you’re friends with them, you can’t be friends with us.” Lindsey said with a quick glance at her boyfriend, Jeremy for an answer. He just looked at her.
“I don’t get why not. They were nice to me, can’t I at least talk to them?” Courteney said pulling away from Lindsey’s grasp. “I mean, come on, they’re humans too, and it’s not like I can’t talk to anyone but you guys. It’s a free country!”
Jeremy looked at her and then at Lindsey, “Hey, Lins, come on, I mean you can’t have that much hate for them.” He looked over at them as he spoke. “Lins here used to be friends with them before they got, as she says, ‘weird’. If you ask me, they just have mental problems.” He took a bite of his sandwich as some of the other students laughed.
Courteney picked up her tray. “I’m going to eat with them today. Say what you will, but I don’t think they have problems, I think you do.” With that she walked over to Katie and Andrea. “Do you mind if I sit down?” She asked politely.
Katie looked up from her book. “Oh, I guess not. I just thought that you wanted to sit with those…” she broke off.
Andrea looked at Katie and then Courteney. “You can sit here. Don’t mind her, she’s had bad experiences with popularity.” Katie looked down at her lunch tray.
“Yeah, I kind of have.” She turned to Andrea, “You sure you don’t want any of my lunch, I have plenty?”
Andrea squirmed a little. “No thanks, but do you happen to have a dollar? I’m kind of thirsty.”
“I have a five, if you’ll bring me the change.” Katie said pulling a five out of her pocket.
“Thanks, Katie, you rock.” Andrea jumped up from the table and ran off.
As Kaleb walked up, he noticed the awkward moment, then he decided it would be best to take the quick approach. He ran up and jumped onto the picnic table. “How are you two ladies doing today? Courteney, nice to have you back. Have you seen Jake?”
Katie laughed. “I think he said he had to take a test today. Dude, two weeks into school and the guy’s already behind.” They all laughed at that comment.
“Yeah, I think it’s just something he’s used to.” Kaleb added as he slid onto the seat. “So, Court, how’s Lindsey and her posse?” He said with a glance towards the popular table.
“Oh, they’re fine I guess. Rude as ever though.” The last part made Katie grin.
“I don’t see why they have to be that way.” Kaleb said. “We used to be friends. I guess it has something to do with hormones, they got em’, and they let them get to their heads.” Andrea clapped as she walked over, and Kaleb stood up and took a bow, taking off the red hat that he was wearing.
“Kaleb, I sure hope you weren’t wearing that hat, you know the school’s policies.” Uh, oh, it was the lunch “overseer” as she called herself. In fact her name was Mrs. Franz. Kaleb jumped at her voice.
“Uh, no, ma’am. I was not wearing a hat on school property. I know the rules. Thank you for your concern though.” Kaleb said turning around to face her.
“Well, don’t let me catch you, because if I do, it won’t be pretty for your hat.” With that, she walked off.
Andrea laughed. “You always get busted for that.”
“And I loose more hats that way.” Kaleb said sitting back down. “Sheesh, her timing is getting better.” He looked around and then put his hat back on.
“Kal, no hats.” Jacob said imitating Mrs. Franz as he walked up.
Kaleb laughed. “So, are you up to date in your classes now?”
“I think so, stupid homework and stupid flue, my sister gets it, I get it, my brother gets it. It runs in the family I guess.” Jacob said as he leaned up against the table.
“Yeah, it runs in your family like being bad runs in mine.” Kaleb grinned out from underneath his hat.
Jacob laughed. “If you mean being disgusting and having some of the worst behavior problems ever, then yeah, that’s correct.” Katie and Andrea laughed at that one. Courteney just looked at them.
“Kal has a problem with authorities and them keeping live rats in the lab.” Andrea said looking towards the school. “Can I tell her about what happened last year? You know, with they rats?” She glanced at Jacob and then Kaleb. Jacob shrugged.
“I don’t know, it might not be the right thing to talk about at the lunch table,” Kaleb said a little uneasy at the mention of that story. “And anyways, I did not kill the rat. For the last time, it was already dead.” Jacob laughed at that. “Well, it was, you can choose what you want to believe. I was dead when I got in there.” Kaleb said taking off his hat to stare at Jacob.
“Well, can I tell the story?” Andrea said giggling at the look on Kaleb’s face. “I’ll take that as a yes. Well, about this time last year, Kal, Jake and Katie came over to the school. It was something about trying to free the rats. Well, anyways, they came over in the middle of the night and broke into the lab.”
“I wouldn’t say broke in, it was kind of unlocked.” Katie added.
“Whatever, it’s still breaking in. So they go in, and Katie goes back out to the car. Jake is standing outside of the lab when Kal walks out with a dead rat in his hands. Jake asks him what happened and Kal just says ‘it died.’ He always liked the lab rats. Then he got this crazy idea to hang the rat in Mrs. Franz’s doorway. The next morning, she nearly has a heart attack.” The all laughed.
“The rat was already dead, and we had the keys to the lab, so we didn’t break in.” Kaleb added quickly, “The rat had been poisoned. I knew by the food in its cage. I know who poisoned it too.”
Jacob laughed, “I think we all do, it was one of the science geeks. They had been doing experiments on the rats and what vitamins to put in their food to make them smarter. They used the wrong one I guess.” He laughed even harder.
“Yeah, either that or too much of it.” Kaleb said.
The bell rang. Katie looked up. “We’d better get to class, don’t want to scratch that attendance record, right Jacob?” They all laughed.
“Right, see ya’ll after school right? Hey, how ‘bout Courteney comes with us?” Jacob asked looking at Kaleb.
“If she wants. So, you want to hang out with us as soon as the last bell rings?” Kaleb said turning to Courteney.
“Sure, why not.” Courteney said. The others liked that answer as they all went off to their next class.
-O-
As Courteney walked out of the school building Katie and Andrea motioned to her.
“Ok, so we’re going to Kal’s house today. Do you need direct… of course you do.” Katie said, interrupting herself.
“So where exactly is his house?” Courteney asked a little confused.
Andrea shrugged, “Oh, it’s a small house… you can’t miss it.”
“It’s off of King’s Road. It’s the road right past the school.” Katie added and Courteney shrugged, so she continued “It has blue shudders and a green door and also a huge Oak tree in the front.”
Courteney laughed. “Ok, so whish road and which number?” She asked.
“205 Shadow Lane.” Kaleb said sneaking up on them. He laughed when they jumped. “Yeah, they don’t give very well directions… I could draw you a map or I could just drive you there myself.”
Courteney smiled. “I could just follow you there, since I don’t like the thought of leaving my car here and having to come back to get it. This school parking lot is dangerous. Just look at all the speeding cars.”
Jacob had been standing on the sidewalk when a yellow Mustang nearly hit him. Everyone laughed when he jumped.
“You know, it might not be so safe around here, are you guys done talking yet?” Jacob asked as he walked over.
Katie grinned, “You nearly got hit there. Anyways, we’re just about finished with the directions; Courteney’s going to just follow us there.”
“If she can keep up.” Kaleb added with a grin, then he added “It’s not too far, you can find it easily. Are we ready?”
With that they were off.
-O-
Kaleb’s house was one of the older houses on his block. It was beige and, like Katie had said, had blue shutters and a green door. The Oak tree in front had a tire swing on it and there was a bench nearby. Kaleb pulled his car into the garage and Brian pulled up behind him. Courteney pulled in next to Brian’s truck and got out.
“So, this is it. It’s not much, but it’s home.” Kaleb said as he walked out of the garage.
“It looks cozy.” Courteney said. Andrea and Katie laughed as Kaleb looked at Jacob and Brian and rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever… my mom’s home, so let’s go up to my room.” He said opening the front door. As they walked in a middle aged woman came from the kitchen, she was wearing an apron.
“Hey everyone, how was school?” She asked. She had a nice calm, quiet voice, but her eyes seemed a little sad.
“Hey mom, school was good. Did you make cookies?” Kaleb smiled at her as he sniffed the air.
“Yes, I did make cookies. I figured I might as well, but I don’t know how long they’ll last with you three boys around.” Everyone laughed. She went into the kitchen and came out with a basket of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. “Katie, you take these, I want to make sure that the girls get some too.” As she handed the basket to Katie she noticed Courteney. “Oh, hello, I don’t think I know you. I’m Kaleb’s mom.”
Courteney smiled. “I’m Courteney.”
“She’s new in town; well, she was a couple of weeks ago.” Kaleb said for her. His mom smiled at him. “We’ll be upstairs if you need us, ok?”
“Ok, try not to be too loud please; I have some work I need to get done.” His mom said as the six of them trotted up the stairs.
-O-
As soon as they all got in his room, Kaleb closed the door and turned on his CD player. Immediately, loud music filled the room and he jumped as he turned it down.
“Sorry about that, I had a hard time waking up this morning.” Kaleb looked around. “Well, try to find a place to sit if you want to… Katie, you’re gonna have to hand them over some time today.”
Katie laughed as she gave him the basket of cookies. “Alright but save some.”
Kaleb climbed to the top of his bunk beds and hung his feet over the edge. Jacob followed him. Andrea sat on a bean bag across from them and motioned Katie and Courteney over. Brian just stood in the middle of the room. Finally, he jumped up with Kaleb and Jacob. |
